View Product ↗Workstation-on-Wheels (WOW) and Computer-on-Wheels (COW) carts put a clinical workstation at the bedside — and because they move between patients, cleanability is the whole point. A cart that can't be wiped down fast, with a keyboard and mouse that trap bioburden in seams and switches, works against the infection-control programme it's meant to support.
The terms are often used interchangeably, but WOW (Workstation on Wheels) typically refers to a fuller clinical workstation — height-adjustable, with integrated power and mounting for a full-size keyboard, monitor and scanner. COW (Computer on Wheels) is usually the lighter, simpler version of the same idea: a laptop or thin client on a mobile cart for quick bedside charting. Both share the same infection-control requirement — every surface a clinician's hands touch between patients has to be cleanable in seconds, not minutes.
Cart power is the most common point of failure in a WOW/COW fleet — a workstation that dies mid-round is worse than no workstation at all. Most WOW carts run on a sealed lead-acid or lithium battery pack built into the base, with runtime typically specified to cover a full shift under normal use; a hot-swappable battery design lets a flat cart return to service in the time it takes to change a pack, rather than sitting on a static charger for hours. Not every WOW/COW cart does the same job. A medication administration cart typically needs a locked, compartmentalised drawer system, a barcode or RFID scanner mounted at working height, and an audit trail linking each scan back to the EMR — the workflow is deliberately slower and secured. A general charting or observations cart is built for speed instead: light, manoeuvrable and with minimal drawer hardware, optimised for moving quickly between beds. Specifying the wrong type for the workflow is one of the most common reasons a cart fleet ends up parked in a corridor rather than used at the bedside.

A network isolator provides galvanic isolation on the Ethernet line, breaking the conductive path between the patient-area device and the rest of the hospital network so that fault currents and leakage can't travel between them.
IEC 60601-1 sets the patient-area electrical safety context that hospital biomedical and clinical engineering teams already work to for medical devices. Where IT hardware — PCs, monitors, network switches — sits within reach of a patient or connects into equipment that does, isolating the network connection is one of the standard ways facilities manage that risk without re-certifying the IT hardware itself as a medical device.

The most common places a network isolator gets specified are bedside workstations and WOW/COW carts connecting to the hospital network from within a patient care vicinity, nurse call terminals wired into a shared network segment, and fixed IT equipment — PCs, monitors, small switches — mounted on or near patient-connected medical equipment. In each case the isolator sits on the Ethernet run between the IT hardware and the rest of the network, rather than on the medical device itself.

Many WOW carts use a removable battery pack that can be swapped for a charged one in under a minute, so a flat cart returns to service immediately instead of sitting on a charger for hours. Not every cart design supports hot-swap — it's one of the first questions to ask when specifying a fleet, particularly for units running continuously across a 24-hour ward.
A fully loaded WOW cart with monitor, keyboard, scanner and battery typically weighs in the range of 20–40kg depending on configuration, while a lighter COW cart carrying just a laptop or thin client can weigh under 15kg. Corridor width, lift dimensions, door clearances and existing storage bays all need checking before a fleet is ordered — our team can talk through the footprint of specific configurations as they become available.
Cart hardware is largely EMR-agnostic — it's a mounting and power platform for a laptop, thin client or all-in-one PC your IT team already runs. The integration questions that matter are network connectivity (including whether a network isolator is required for the connection), barcode/RFID scanner compatibility with your medication administration system, and any tap-on/tap-off or single sign-on login hardware your hospital uses. We work through these with your IT and clinical engineering teams before specifying a configuration.
A correctly specified isolator matched to the link speed in use shouldn't introduce a noticeable bottleneck, but a unit rated below the network's actual speed will. Checking the throughput rating against your actual network speed — rather than assuming any isolator will do — is one of the most common specification mistakes.
It depends how the cart connects and what it's near. A cart connecting wirelessly to the hospital network typically doesn't raise the same isolation question as a wired Ethernet connection running into a patient care vicinity. Where a cart is hard-wired, or connects into equipment that is, it's worth reviewing with your biomedical or clinical engineering team as part of the same specification process as the cart itself.
